Odonate Species List for Southwest OK*: Calopterygidae - Lestidae

The following annotation is derived from my personal observations, largely as a result of casual observation (July-Aug 06) and more deliberate effort (May - Aug 07) in the course of field study of the Black-capped Vireo on Fort Sill M.R. This research is wholly supported by Glen Wampler & Toni Hodgkins of the Fort Sill Nat. Res. Office, Dept. of the Army, Fort Sill M.R.  Formal research into the aquatic insects of Fort Sill was conducted 2002-2007 by Colorado State University.  Results, including 67 species of Odonata from the 2002-2004 seasons, were published in June 2006 by Zuellig et al.

Calopterygidae (3 species)

Calopteryx maculata (Ebony Jewelwing) ...  ZET   |  OC
2006-07: Thus far I have failed to locate this species anywhere in SW OK. ZET only found it at White Wolf Bridge at Apache Gate Rd. This area was devastated by flooding 7 May thru mid-July with flood water only receding 20-22 July.
FLIGHT DATES: UNKNOWN   |   ABUNDANCE:  RARE?

 Hetaerina americana (American Rubyspot)
... PH   |   ZET   |  OC
2006: Sighted on one occasion. An adult male and possibly a female or immature male photographed adjacent  in the shaded bank of Medicine Creek where it crosses the N Boundary Rd. of Fort Sill M.R. (site 38 in ZET).
2007:  This species has proven locally abundant along Medicine Bluff Creek on Fort Sill at various sites on West Range. I have also photographed it 3 km upstream from Meers on Medicine Creek (AKA Medicine Bluff Creek upstream of Lake Lawtonka). Found ABUNDANT from 1 May through 8 Aug. Up to 185 in a 100 meter transect below dam at Nat. Res. Office 30 July. At Two-Tower Rd. crossing, up to 20 per square meter 31 July (PH). Also found to be FAIRLY COMMON along Blue Beaver Creek below Ketch Lake in early Aug.

FLIGHT DATES: 1 May - 8 Aug   |   ABUNDANCE:  FAIRLY COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT)

  Hetaerina titia
(Smoky Rubyspot)  .... PH   |   ZET   |   SUB-OC
2006: A single male was found (PH) in early Aug along Medicine Bluff Creek at the N Boundary Rd. crossing of Fort Sill M.R. (appx. 2  km below the dam of Lake Lawtonka). It was in the immediate vicinity of 3-4 American Rubyspots noted below. The stream was of moderate flow, with thick grass lined banks. The rubyspots were on the bank heavily shaded by tall oak canopy. However, Smoky Rubyspot was first reported from Comanche County by Zuellig et al. on Fort Sill at 3 locations (sites 7, 29, 41) which correspond to East Cache Creek at the S boundary fence (AKA Pig Farm Crossing), Natches Pond, and Ouray Pond respectively.
2007: A single male found (PH) 31 July along Medicine Bluff Creek at Two-Towers Rd. crossing (ZET site 35). about 2 km downstream from 2006 sighting. This individual was in the immediate (10 meters) vicinity of 40+ American Rubyspots.

FLIGHT DATES: 31 July - 4 Aug   |   ABUNDANCE:  RARE

Lestidae  (3 species)

Archilestes grandis (Great Spreadwing)  ...  PH  |  OC
2006: I identifed a single spreadwing from Fort Sill in 2006 (PH). A male Great Spreadwing was in the immediate vicinity of the Flame Skimmer N of the EOD, West Range, Fort Sill M.R. 28 June 06. Zuellig et al. failed to locate this species on Fort Sill, although an earlier work by Bass (1990) reported the species from the Wichita Mtns.  None of the 41 sites sampled by ZET included rocky mountain streams or lakes.
2007: Subsequently, I have found this species consistently in the high drainages off Cross/Sherman Mtns. In 3 ephemeral creeks (with long-standing pools fed by seeps), this species has been observed (PH) ovipositing in tandem. The only other Ode seen consistently sharing this habitat has been Flame Skimmer. In June 2007 Dr. Joe Grzybowski reported an obs. from the adjacent Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge.
FLIGHT DATES: 4 June - 17 July   |   ABUNDANCE:  Locally UNCOMMON

Lestes alacer (Plateau Spreadwing)  ...   |  OC  |  ZET
2006-07:  I have yet to identify this species in SW OK. ZET only recorded the species at 2 sites on Quanah Range. I have yet to visit this area.
FLIGHT DATES: UNKNOWN   |   ABUNDANCE:  ?

Lestes australis (Southern Spreadwing)  ...  PH  |  OC  |  ZET
2006: No observations. ZET located the species at two sites, one eahc on East Range and Quanah Range.
2007: I first encounterd this species 29 May in Tillman County (PH below). Subsequently, I have seen individual spreadwings at Craig Hill (PH) under shady forest canopy and atop Little Baldy in exposed Rock Cress with minimal Plains Coreopsis cover.
FLIGHT DATES: early July  |   ABUNDANCE:  Local & RARE?
