Odonate Species List for
Southwest
OK*: Libellulidae ...
cont. The following annotation is derived from my personal observations, largely as a result of casual observation (July-Aug 06) and more deliberate effort (May - Aug 07) in the course of field study of the Black-capped Vireo on Fort Sill M.R. This research is wholly supported by Glen Wampler & Toni Hodgkins of the Fort Sill Nat. Res. Office, Dept. of the Army, Fort Sill M.R. Formal research into the aquatic insects of Fort Sill was conducted 2002-2007 by Colorado State University. Results, including 67 species of Odonata from the 2002-2004 seasons, were available online in June 2006 by Zuellig et al. KEY: PH = personal photographic record | OC = listed in Odonata Central | ZET = listed in Zuellig | SUB-OC = record submitted to Odonata Central |

Libellulidae: Pachydiplax through TrameaPachydiplax longipennis (Blue Dasher) ... ZET | OC2006: Noted on Fort Sill daily throughout study period 28 July - 30 Aug. Present at most any pond location. Generally FAIRLY COMMON. 2007: Photographed at L.Waurika, Cotton County 3 May where a New County Record. Subsequently photographed 14 May at Hackberry Flat W.M.A., Tillman County where also a NCR. On Fort Sill noted daily at ponds. As the season progressed and stream flow was reduced, the species could be found along even minor watercourse (e.g. Crater Creek) in well shaded, closed canopy conditions. One roadside ditch on West Range harbored nothing but this species. Here there were 30+ in a 30 meter X 5 meter area ... the site was bone dry by 1 Aug. The species is numerous at a wetland preserve in Walters, Cotton County, as well as ditches along the N boundary of Hackberry Flat. Also recorded from Kiowa County in early July (Great Plains S.P.). FLIGHT DATES: 1 May - 31 Aug | ABUNDANCE: COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT) Pantala flavescens (Wandering Glider) ... | ZET | OC 2006: I failed to identify this species, however in a mass of Spot-winged Gliders at Lake Ellsworth 30 Aug, Dr. Joe Grzybowski photographed one. 2007: No observations in 07. FLIGHT DATES: 30 Aug | ABUNDANCE: FAIRLY COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT) Pantala hymenaea (Spot-winged Glider) .... PH | ZET | OC 2006: .............................. 2007: .............................. FLIGHT DATES: 18 June - 30 Aug | ABUNDANCE: UNCOMMON (LOCALLY COMMON) Perithemis tenera (Eastern Amberwing) ... PH | ZET | OC 2006: ......................... 2007: ......................... FLIGHT DATES: 3 May - 30 Aug | ABUNDANCE: UNCOMMON (Locally FAIRLY COMMON) Plathemis lydia (Common Whitetail) ... PH | OC | ZET 2006-07: FLIGHT DATES: 1 May - 30 Aug | ABUNDANCE: UNCOMMON but widespread (LOCALLY FAIRLY COMMON) Sympetrum corruptum (Variegated Meadowhawk) ... PH | OC | ZET 2006: Not detected until 16 Nov when photographed at Hackberry Flat WMA. Up to a dozen were present. 2007: Immediately noted as the most numerous and widespread species away from water. This common roadside species was LOCALLY ABUNDANT near Lake Waurika, (Cotton Co.) and Hackberry Flat WMA during May. Numbers subsided dramatically in early July. A 3 km transect (driving) of dikes at Hackberry Flat WMA est. 6000 individuals the first week of May. FLIGHT DATES: 1 May - 16 Nov | ABUNDANCE: COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT) Sympetrum vicinum (Autumn Meadowhawk) ... PH | OC | ZET 2006: No observations. 2007: In mid-June (rather early), Dr. Joe Grzybowski photographed this species in the Wichita Mtns. In late June, I photographed a single individual at Sunset Picnic Area. FLIGHT DATES: 18 June - ? | ABUNDANCE: RARE Tramea lacerata (Black Saddlebags) ... PH | OC | ZET 2006: Scant observations. Noted as a single individual along Medicine Creek mid-Aug. Then as a swarm of 60-70 above the Nat. Res. Office of Fort Sill the following week. One more seen at Quanah-Parker Dam (ph) in late Aug. 2007: A very different season. Hugely ABUNDANT 4 May at Hackberry Flat WMA where in excess of 10,000 occupied the flooded areas (about 2500 acreas). Noted daily throughout the season , througout the region, across habitats.. Perhaps the most ubiquitous species in southwest Oklahoma. However, photographs are hard to come by and several counties await documentation. FLIGHT DATES: 1 May - 31 Aug | ABUNDANCE: COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT) Tramea onusta (Red Saddlebags) ... PH | OC | ZET 2006: Only encountered 4 Aug at Hackberry Flat WMA where an est. 7-8000 Tramea were amassed within the square mile vicinity of the main reservoir. Of the 20 seen perched (and photographed) ALL were onusta. 2007: Found sparingly although daily throughout the season (1 May - Aug) widely across Fort Sill and much of Comanche County. Not numerous however, away from Hackberry Flat WMA. Typically 2-6 per location preferring ponds but occasionally well away from water. One mating wheel photographed at Antennae Hill in early July was high in the rocks and 300 meters from any water source. FLIGHT DATES: 3 May - 31 July | ABUNDANCE: COMMON (LOCALLY ABUNDANT) |
